We have transportation options on the market and coming soon, that are much smaller and lighter than present generation vehicles. These vehicles have the great potential of savings - money and environment with its less fuel consumption and higher gas mileage.
As one who has loved driving small, light vehicles, like the now discontinued Honda Insight, but who has experienced the insecure feeling of being inside it surrounded by giant pickups and SUVs, I often wonder what can be done to facilitate our transition to less domineering vehicles that rule our roads.

How about taxing gas, as well as instituting a national sales tax on vehicles over a certain weight and under a certain fuel economy. The money raised could be used to create new infrastructure for smaller, lighter, eco-friendly alternative vehicles. Our economy and our budgets absorbed the shock when gas was over $3.00 per gallon. Let's start with a tax that brings in the difference between current prices and $3.00 per gallon and make that amount the tax amount, no matter how high gas prices go. We shouldn't wait until we are hit again by oil cartel and oil company price hikes. Let's take action now to inspire reinvention of our transportation vehicle and infrastructure options.
